From wildlife spectacles to inspiring landscapes, Tanzania has everything you could want from a safari

  • Witness the annual great migration of a million wildebeest and zebra across the open plains of the Serengeti
  • Look out over incredible views of the Ngorongoro crater
  • Walk beside chimpanzees in the Mahale mountains
  • Drive with an immense herd of elephants in the wild Selous Game reserves
  • Try climbing to the roof of Africa at the snowy peak of Kilimanjaro
  • Simply spoil yourself with the untamed luxury of the  Grumeti Game Reserve’s lodge

Where to visit on a Tanzania luxury safari

In our opinion, the Grumeti Reserve is the cream of the crop—one of the most unbelievable places in all of Africa, with Faru Faru lodge being a favorite contemporary camp.

If you’re not focused on the Great Migration, then we recommend visiting the northern Serengeti in the off-season (January to mid-March, June and November to mid-December). The scenery is simply spectacular and since most wildlife doesn’t migrate like the wildebeest, you’ll get lots of solo time with all the resident wildlife including big cats and antelope herds. A few of our favorite camps include lamai Serengeti , Singita Mara River  and Lemala Kirin Hills.

Visiting the Ngorongoro Crater can get crowded at certain times of the year. We recommend choosing a camp like Entamanu which is in off the beaten track Maasai territory. Pro tip: Head out on game drives in the early morning rather than in the afternoon.

If you have been to the Serengeti, then consider a return trip to western or southern Tanzania We also love enjoying the slower safari pace at Chem Chem Lodge, secretly tucked between Tarangire and Lake Manyara. For something a bit more remote and off the beaten path, we love both Ruah in the south (including  Ikuka Safari Camp and  Kigelia Ruaha), as well as Mahale Mountains in the west for some of the best chimp trekking in Africa. And for some beach time away from the crowds, The Manta  Resort  on Pemba Island is not to be missed for your dose of barefoot beach luxury

Tanzania: All Inclusive African Safari Cost  Are The Best Option

Budget itineraries can start as low as $300 per person per night – but this is the bottom of the range for mass-market tourism and we don’t recommend or sell these trips. The upmarket, luxury properties cost between $600-$1,300 per person per night during peak season, with the most exclusive properties reaching $2,700 per person per night. For the best experience, we do not advocate going below $500 per person per night for a Tanzania safari.

4 & 5 STAR  AFRICAN SAFARI RATING

The most common question we get asked is, how much does an Tanzania luxury safari  lodges cost? This definitive guide to prices, specials, seasons, destinations and more provides the information you need to plan your vacation budget.

4 Star

7 Nights from $5,297 pps

You’ll be surprised to learn that the good four star safari lodges would be considered five star in most countries, and many of them will no doubt be upgraded in due course, but until then you can get them at four star prices.

Four star properties also come with all-inclusive packages and a good 4-start Tanzania luxury safari lodge for 7 days starts at around $5,297 but with a few upgrades here and there you should realistically budget for closer to $6000.

5 Star

7 Nights from $6,757 pps

The five star safari lodges enjoy the finest locations for animal viewing and the most luxurious finishes.

If you want to experience a more intimate wildlife experience then these lodges provide more remote access more often than not in private concessions.

A five star Tanzania luxury safari  lodge holiday typically costs around $1,000 per person daily.

5 Star African Safari Premium

7 Nights from $8,897 pps

There are only 10 lodges and hotels in Africa boasting the prestigious title of Five Star Premium.

These are the very best of the best and no attention to detail is missed when striving for such an honour.

You can expect to pay from $1,000 up to $3,000 per person daily at one of the these exquisite properties and their locations are the best available in Tanzania luxury safari  lodges.

Tanzania luxury safari  lodges Analysis:

  • The costs quoted are rough guidelines, and are per person sharing (single travelers almost always pay a single supplement of between 30-50%). They are fully inclusive, starting and ending at the nearest major airport. Rates include charter flights, accommodation, meals, activities, laundry, park fees, services of a professional guide, and drinks. International flights to and from the starting and ending points are not included.
  • The costings are based on travel in peak season. Where applicable, off-peak periods and approximate cost savings during these time-frames are listed. Where a price range is given for peak season, this reflects the difference between mid-range and “top of the line” accommodation options.
  • Concentrations of high profile game (especially predators and/or the ‘Big Five’). and the most consistent factor influencing pricing.
  • Exclusivity. As a rule, the fewer guests that can be accommodated in a wilderness area, the higher the rates. Top-of-the-line camps in Tanzania are also often located on private conservancies which, in most respects, is more desirable than being in a public Park.
  • Camp/lodge experience. The level of style and luxury in accommodation, the quality of food and service, facilities and amenities, ambience, and attention to detail. The more expensive properties invariably excel in these elements of the safari experience.
  • Guides. Many factors influence where guides want to work, but two of the most important are concentrations of game and remuneration. As a rule, the best guides like to be based at the more high end lodges/camps.
  • Convenience. Camps/lodges with private airstrips that are close to camp offer increased convenience due to shorter transfer times between the airstrip and camp. This means less time in transit and more time on safari or relaxing. Such airstrips, in addition to being expensive to build and maintain, are desirable to guests and attract a premium.

When to Visit Tanzania

The high season in Tanzania is between July and October and from December to February – the dry seasons when game is easier to spot. To avoid the crowds, consider May, November and early December, although you should expect some rain. If you are traveling to western or southern Tanzania, then May through early October is best, as it can be very hot during the rest of the year. April and May endure long rains in Tanzania, so be prepared for un-drivable roads and muddy, buggy

Note on All Inclusive African safari

Many people are looking for an all-inclusive 10 day African safari. But the very nature of a African safari is that it DOES include everything. Usually all meals, teas & coffees, game activities and park fees. The exact nature of “all-inclusive” varies from lodge to lodge. And the more moderate lodges and safari lodges may not include drinks. But Premier lodges will usually include house wines, spirits and soft drinks. Most safari activities will be included. But there are some obvious exceptions. These are usually big ticket items such as a hot air balloon safari over the Serengeti. (Though you can ask to add this in as an extra.) Similarly in Tanzania we sometimes recommend a day at leisure in the Ngorongoro Crater area. This breaks up the safari. Plus there’s a great range of optional activities such as coffee farm tours, visits to the Maasai community, guided walks in the Highlands to name but a few…If in doubt, ask us!
