Pangani Beach

Welcome to Tanzania ! Pangani beach is a wonderful discovery! The quiet beaches of the mainland in Pangani are not easy to reach, but it is worth the effort for those who seek peace and tranquility in a real hideaway of tropical beauty rather than the hustle and bustle of the noisy and expensive islands.

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be welcomed by your driver. Together you transfer to Arusha from where you will continue by plane (around 2 hours flight) or by Jeep to Pangani (around 8 hours drive). Alternatively, you can directly arrive in Tanga or Pangani. In any case, one of our partners will already be awaiting you upon arrival.

Together you continue to Mike’s Beach Cottages, located right by Ushongo Beach.

Pangani is located some 470 km south-east of Arusha. The journey from Arusha takes you through Moshi, Same, Segera and finally to the mouth of Pangani river. A brand new ferry that operates from 06:30 hrs to 18:30hrs will take you across to Pangani town.

Pangani beach holidays on the coast of Tanzania with highlights including….

  • Beautiful beaches with white sands and blue waters perfect for relaxation with great weather almost all year.
  • Intimate accommodation with small properties and low volumes of tourists.

Travel Tips from our experts about Pangani

Why visit Pangani?

Pangani is a quiet place to rest and relax. It lays on the Indian Ocean and offers many things to do on your visit. It is a nice place to enjoy the beach, to go on snorkeling or diving excursions. Most of the lodges offer windsurfing, kayaking and dhow rides as well as fishing trips. Longer trips such as the one to Zanzibar Island, a cruise on the Pangani River or possibly even a trip further south to the recently demarcated Saadani national park can be arranged.

A Swahili coast town:Archaeologists have found evidence of settlements dating back to the 15th century; however its importance as a major trading hub came about in the 19th century when Pangani was a terminus for the trade caravan routes, especially the selling of slaves coming from the interior of then Tanganyika and beyond. As the slave trade was stopped, Pangani soon became the administrative centre for the German rule and eventually fell into British administration following defeat of Germany in World War II. Even today, it is still possible to see the old buildings and bomas that once stood strong under the various powers.

Today, almost a century later, Pangani has changed a little and therefore it offers a visitor to Tanzania an unforgettable experience that cannot be found anywhere else in East Africa. It is for this reason a destination that is only known to a few who have been there, enjoyed and gone back with pleasant memories of a bygone era.

Secrets revealed: Pangani has it all, from the Swahili Coast’s rich history and culture, to pristine and palm-fringed beaches, deep-sea fishing plus a marine reserve.

In 2003 local fishermen accidentally caught a fish called “Coelacanth”, which is referred to as a  “living fossil”. This type of fish is thought to pre-date dinosaurs by over 300 million years! Due to the fact that this fish is only found in small numbers off South Africa and Indonesia, it is classified as a critically endangered species. As a result of this discovery, the government of Tanzania in 2009 declared a large area north of Pangani to be a marine reserve to protect this rare fish. The reserve includes South Head & Tongoni Reef, plus Karange and Yambe Islands.

How to get to Pangani: A 6-hour drive by road, or a scheduled flight (minimum 2 persons) that operates from Arusha daily departing at 1300hrs, arriving Pangani airstrip at 1520 (via Zanzibar). Return flight departs Pangani at 1540hrs and arrives Arusha at 1700hrs.

Excursions in Pangani

Along the seemingly endless coast lined with palm trees and coconuts are the lodges. A quiet place to rest and relax. Despite its secluded location there are a number of alternatives if you want more than just peace and quiet.

Snorkeling or diving excursions can be arranged with local fishermen. These Swahili fishermen are also more than willing to offer their services and take you to and from the sandbanks off the coast for a picnic in the sun. Although their ngalawas (wooden boats) are of somewhat rough manufacture, these small boats cut through the ocean like a knife. The coral reefs are not far from the coast. So if you are energetic, dive into this incredible underwater dreamland!

Or you can take the boat to a small sand island, Maziwi (newly designated as a marine reserve) rests on the coral reef. Most of the lodges offer windsurfing, kayaking and dhow rides as well as fishing trips.

Where to stay:

There are a number of options for accommodations in Pangani area. However, we would recommend:-

  • Mike’s Beach Cottages
  • The Tides lodge
  • Emayani Beach lodge

When to go Year around

Experiencing Pangani: This is a beach extension, Pangani is a natural choice for those wishing to try something different and exciting. It can be combined with an excursion to Mkomazi National Park and Amani Nature reserve or an extension following a safari in Northern Circuit or simply a beach getaway.

Alternatively: You can optionally add days to relax on the white sandy beaches Zanzibar.

Those who want to travel from Pangani and Ushongo Beach to Zanzibar essentially have two possibilities. You can either fly with a propeller plane or use the boat for crossing the sea. The flight takes about 20 minutes, the boat takes about an hour. We had opted for the latter option. The crossing went well despite some waves and rainfall (especially outside the rainy season the sea is normally very calm). We were accompanied by flying fish and enjoyed having only water around us for a while.

Remote coastal Tanzania, few tourists, bush and beach together, snorkelling, sandbar lunches
